Javier Báez was benched in last night's game against the Blue Jays for a baserunning mistake. His rough start to 2023 seems like it just keeps getting worse and worse.
Báez hit a double in the top of the second inning against the Toronto Blue Jays, and got a slow start out of the batter’s box thinking the ball was gone. Akil Baddoo then sent a fly ball to center field and Báez took off from second base.
Obviously, that would've been okay but there was one big issue with this, there was only one out. Daulton Varsho was able to double up Javier Báez to end the inning. He was then seen heading into the team's tunnel with manager, A.J. Hinch. When the two arrived back in the dugout, Báez was seen untucking his jersey and heading right back down the stairs.
This is one of many problems surrounding the Tigers shortstop. He's currently slashing .122/.182/.146 going 5/41 with 0 home runs and 1 RBI. Báez is currently in his second year of his six-year deal with the Tigers. A deal that is worth a total of $140M.
