Marlins Designate Veteran Outfielder for Assignment

In an unexpected move, the Miami Marlins have designated outfielder Avisail Garcia for assignment. Per, Jeff Passan. This is an unexpected move due to the fact that just a few years ago Garcia got an extension by the Marlins. Now, he will be able to join a new team in the middle of the 2024 season.

Avisail Garcia is in the third year of a four-year, $53 million contract. The Marlins will eat nearly $24 million on the deal.

The Marlins will have to eat the remaining salary for 2024, $12 million in 2025, and a $5 million buyout in 2026.

It’s not often that you see teams giving up on guys that they have given contract extensions to. Although, the Marlins just thought it was the right move to move on from Garcia. He’s been with them for a few years now, maybe it was best for the two sides to go their own way.

Avisail Garcia stats with the Miami Marlins:

.217/.260/.322, with 13 home runs, and 49 RBI’s. That was in a total of 153 Marlins games.

Avisail Garcia still has a ton of potential in the big leagues. There’s a possibility that all he needed was a change of scenery. Garcia will get his chance to sign with another team once he is officially a free agent.
