OAKLAND, CA: According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies are "keeping a close eye on" A's outfielder Brent Rooker ahead of the trade deadline.
Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies’ president of baseball operations, indicated last month that the organization might only look to make small additions before the July 30 trade deadline and pointed out that the bullpen was one area where the team needed improvement. That is not to imply that this summer, the Phillies won't make any acquisitions besides relief aid.
It is simple to understand why Rooker would blend in perfectly with the team's outfield lineup. With a 127 wRC+ in 137 games last season, the 29-year-old initially made a splash with the A's, but he's already elevated his offensive game in the 2024 season.
With a wRC+ of 153, Rooker has slashed an incredible .277/.351/.540 in 313 at-bats with the team this season. Although Rooker's output has been accompanied by an unsettling strikeout rate of 32.9%, he has compensated for it with a robust walk rate of 9.9% and the seventh-highest isolated slugging percentage in the majors.
Rooker has not only claimed the title as the A’s top hitter, but has made quite the name for himself among the league’s best. With the Athletics heading no where this season, it is likely to see Rooker on the move, with the Phillies leading the charge in the rumor mill.
