AL Wildcard Game One Recap

The MLB Postseason is officially underway as we saw two matchups yesterday take place. Detroit started their series in Houston and Kansas City found themselves in Baltimore. These games may have ended in upsets depending on who’s asked.

Detroit Tigers vs Houston Astros

The Tigers flew to Houston as the sixth seed, having to face the team who has dominated the American League for the last seven seasons. Houston found themselves seeding third.

This game was all Tarik Skubal who pitched an outstanding 6 innings, allowing just 4 hits with no earned runs. Skubal is coming off a regular season where he solidified himself as a top pitcher in baseball and took home the pitching triple crown.

The Tigers took game one in an upset 3-1 win over the Astros. They will now look to fly to Cleveland as early as tomorrow to meet the Guardians in the ALDS. It’ll be Detroit’s Tyler Holton (7-2, 2.19 ERA) against Houston’s Hunter Brown (11-9, 3.49 ERA) in today’s matchup.

Kansas City Royals vs Baltimore Orioles

The Royals have been an underdog story all season long. They have shown what spending a bit of money does to a young core of talent on the field. The fifth seeded Royals marched into fourth seeding Camden Yards to start their series against the Orioles.

This game was an old fashioned pitching matchup. Kansas City’s Cole Ragans pitched 6 innings of no run ball against Baltimore’s Corbin Burnes who pitched 8 innings with just one hiccup that ended up being the deciding factor of a 1-0 Royals victory.

The Royals will now look to travel to the Bronx to face the one seeded Yankees if they can close out the Wildcard series against the Orioles later today. Kansas City will send out veteran Seth Lugo (16-9, 3.00 ERA) against Baltimore’s trade deadline pickup Zach Eflin (10-9, 3.59 ERA).
