The Angels are a team that is in a rough spot. With money locked up with players underperforming, Ohtani now residing on the other side of Los Angeles, and Mike Trout being the only star, they seemingly have no direction.
However, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Angels are “primed” to land either Jordan Montgomery or Blake Snell.
With recent reports of the Yankees “very unlikely” to land Snell, per Jack Curry of YES Network, the Angels have a clear path. Montgomery is expected to be pursued by the Red Sox who are expected to wait for the price tag to drop.
The Angels need a lot of starting pitching help. The current projected rotation of Reid Detmers, Patrick Sandoval, Griffin Canning, Tyler Anderson and Chase Silseth combined for a 4.53 ERA in 613 2/3 innings last season.
Mike Trout was on record stating that he wants to win a championship in Anaheim and requesting a trade would be “the easy way out.”
Being in the AL West, the current home of the reigning World Series champion Texas Rangers, the Angels seemingly need to make one of these star pitcher free agents an Angel to compete.
It’s hard to imagine a world where the Angels don’t land one of these free agents.
However, the Angels have been a reluctant front office in doing so. Their notable free agent signings this offseason have been Robert Stephenson, Adam Cimber and Luis García to revamp the bullpen and veteran outfielder Aaron Hicks for outfield depth.
