Astros Demote Starting First Baseman to Triple-A

The Houston Astros are demoting first baseman José Abreu to Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys. Abreu’s 2024 season has been filled with a lot of downs. It has been miserable for José Abreu, but now the Astros will try to let Abreu start fresh. They will try “to get some at-bats and his timing back right.”

The Astros signed José Abreu as a free agent in 2022. He signed a 3-year, $58.5 million deal to be with the Astros. José Abreu is a former Most Valuable Player, he won the award in 2020 with the Chicago White Sox. Abreu was so good, but this year is certainly not his year. There’s still potential, so that’s why the Astros are hoping José Abreu can return to old form.

José Abreu has been one of the worst starting players on the Astros lineup. He’s a big reason why the Astros as a team are off to a poor start in 2024. In a total of 22 starts, José Abreu is slashing 0.99/.156/.113, Abreu has yet to hit a home run, he’s driven in just 3 runs, he has just 3 hits, and an OPS of .269. It is very rare to see José Abreu get off to such a tough start.

The Astros need José Abreu to perform at a high level to have any chances. It isn’t just José Abreu though, there’s other stars on the Astros team that aren’t performing well. Although, Abreu is the one who stands out. The hope is to get some good at-bats in Triple-A, and José Abreu can be recalled to the MLB soon.
