TORONTO, CA: The Blue Jays manager John Schneider declared to reporters on Friday, including Sportsnet's Shi Davidi, that Jordan Romano's 2024 season is officially finished because he won't be activated from the 60-day injured list before the regular season ends. Early in July, the closer had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, which required a minimum six-week recovery period.
With just 13 2/3 innings of Major League experience, the 31-year-old has a 6.59 ERA, and this news puts an end to an absolutely awful season. Due to some elbow discomfort that arose during Spring Training, Romano started the season on the 15-day injured list.
Once he returned to the mound in mid-April, he was just not very productive. Before it was determined that arthroscopic surgery was all that was necessary, there was some worry that Romano had a more significant UCL-related damage. His final game of the season occurred on May 29. Shortly after, he returned to the 15-day IL.
Romano will continue to throw, according to Schneider, and should have a typical summer, so that's at least encouraging news for his long-term health, but it does make Romano one of the many unanswered questions the Jays will have in 2025 as they try to recover from a very poor season.
The Blue Jays will need to make changes to one of the worst bullpens in baseball, and since the team is unsure of what it will get from its former closer, it will be more difficult to plan how to approach this revamp.
