ATLANTA, GA: According to Tyler Matzek's MLB.com website, the Braves signed the veteran reliever to a minor league contract on August 31. Today, Matzek was given a job at Triple-A Gwinnett.
Matzek was signed before September 1st, making him eligible for the Braves postseason squad. Naturally, Matzek is familiar with postseason baseball in Atlanta, having been a vital component of the Braves' 2021 World Series winning bullpen.
He had further strong results in 2022, but a Tommy John operation in October of that year prevented him from making another postseason run. Matzek returned to duty this year after missing the full 2023 season recovering from the surgery, but over 10 Major League, compiled a 9.90 ERA.
After spending just over a month away from the Braves, Matzek is back, and he'll probably keep working things out in Gwinnett to try to go back to his previous level of play. During his brief tenure in Triple-A Sacramento, Matzek pitched just 4 2/3 innings and had a 5.79 ERA, so his time there wasn't very productive.
Reuniting with former teammates is something the Braves have a habit of doing, and adding Matzek to the Triple-A roster makes sense because Atlanta is already responsible for the remaining portion of his $1.9MM salary through the 2024 season.
