Cleveland DFA’d a Promising Young Arm

The Guardians announced yesterday that they have designated RHP Cal Quantrill for assignment, per Robert Murray of MLB.com. Quantrill bursted onto the scene in Cleveland during the 2021 season after spending two years in San Diego. With the Guardians move, Quantrill will now add to the already loaded free agent market for pitchers.

Without a doubt, Quantrill will latch on elsewhere. Quantrill was set to make $6.6 million and had two years left of team control. After battling injuries, Quantrill finished off the 2023 season strong. His 5.24 ERA in just under 100 innings pitched, are a bit offsetting. Just two years ago, Quantrill's 2.89 ERA made many Cleveland fans excited for their new star pitcher.

Quantrill's career 3.83 ERA will be quite attractive to teams who are looking to add to their pitching staff. In order to make room for Daniel Espino and Cade Smith to make the 40-man roster, Quantrill ended up being the odd man out.
