LOS ANGELES, CA: Right-hander Jack Flaherty will go to Los Angeles as part of a deal agreed upon by the Dodgers and Tigers, according to Detroit Free Press's Evan Petzold. Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Tigers will get shortstop Trey Sweeney and catcher/first baseman Thayron Liranzo.
The Dodgers acquire the top pitcher available for a trade at the 2024 deadline, sparking a lot of conjecture. Flaherty, who turns 29 in October, has made 18 starts this season with a 2.95 ERA. With at least 100 innings pitched, his 32 strikeout percentage is seventh in all of baseball.
Additionally, he cut his walk rate to a record-breaking 4.6%.Ten years ago, the Cardinals selected Flaherty in the first round of the high school draft. In 2018, Flaherty placed fifth in the Rookie of the Year competition. Following that, he had a run of 16 starts with a 0.93 ERA in 2019, which culminated in his fourth-place finish in the NL Cy Young voting.
In December of last year, Flaherty signed a one-year, $14MM contract with the Tigers in an attempt to increase his worth and reenter free agency. Flaherty has been an excellent player for the Tigers, missing only a couple of starts because of back discomfort.
When the Tigers were seven games out of the wild card spot, president of baseball operations Scott Harris decided to take a pair of prospects from the Dodgers instead of receiving compensation in the form of a qualifying offer and draft selection.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto's triceps injury put him on the disabled list, so the Dodgers looked for a front-of-the-rotation arm to platoon with Tyler Glasnow. Flaherty might have it, and last week the team witnessed Clayton Kershaw make his season debut.Gavin Stone, a righty, started the season as the Dodgers' fifth starter and has been a regular all season long.
Yamamoto might still make a comeback, and Walker Buehler is still recovering from hip inflammation. Due to season-long injuries to Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, and Emmet Sheehan, youngsters Justin Wrobleski and River Ryan have been added to the Dodgers lineup.James Paxton, a seasoned starter, was sent to the Red Sox by Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman last week.
