Giants Place Hot Hitting Outfielder on 10-Day IL

SAN FRANCISCO, CA: The Giants announced this afternoon that outfielder Michael Conforto has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain. Outfielder Luis Matos was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

Conforto left the Giants Saturday 5-1 win against the Reds in the bottom of the 4th inning after ripping a single and turning the base. The move comes at insult to injury for the Giants as the club has finally been able to pick up a few wins recently.

After the game, manager Bob Melvin confirmed to reporters that the injury was a hamstring strain, even though it "feels mild." Melvin continued by saying that Conforto was due for an MRI yesterday and that further information would be provided at that time. Conforto's placement on the injured list ensures that he will be out for at least ten days; the Giants have not yet commented on the findings of that MRI.

The 31-year-old Conforto's departure hurts the Giants. The club signed the veteran outfielder to a two-year contract after he missed the entire 2022 season due to injury. Although he had league-average performance with San Francisco the previous season, he has been one of their most productive bats this year with a strong slash line of .280/.331/.490, good for a wRC+ of 136.

With a cumulative wRC+ of just 97 this season, good for 19th in the majors, the Giants' offense has been a bit of a lethargic force, and that production has been a rare bright light for a team that came into today with an 19-23 record.
