NEW YORK, NY: It was announced earlier yesterday that rumors have started regarding bringing an inning limit to Major League Baseball. Six innings are leading the rumor mill.
Heading into the 2023 season, Major League Baseball saw a slew of changes and rules like never before. Rules that were implemented to bring more action to the game of baseball and to keep games from extending a “longer” duration. Those rules include a pitch clock, shift elimination, larger bases, and a limit of pickoff throws.
Rumors that are now are coming from the commissioner’s office is aiming to have starting pitchers spending more time on the mound and pitching deeper into games. These rumors also include aiming for less time in the operating room as baseball has seen a spike in pitcher injuries.
"We are interested in increasing the amount of action in the game, restoring the prominence of the starting pitcher and reducing the prevalence of pitching injuries," an MLB official told sources at ESPN. "There are a whole host of options in addressing those issues."
Starting pitching should be given priority; a struggling starter should not be allowed to achieve the innings threshold while his ERA is skyrocketing or he runs the danger of being hurt. Carve-outs, or situations in which pitchers would not be forced to pitch the requisite six innings, have so been discussed by the league. A starter might be permitted to leave early in the following situations:
He launches one hundred pitches.
He gives up at least four well-earned runs.
He sustains an injury (requiring a spell on the injured list to prevent manipulation).
Pitchers would be required to go at least six innings, barring those few exclusions. Teams would have to reconsider their pitching staffs in order to comply with the new requirements.
