SEATTLE, WA: Right-hander Luis Castillo of the Mariners departed Sunday's game because of a strain in his left hamstring; on Monday, he will get an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.

Castillo shifted on the mound to avoid a throw that never came from catcher Mitch Garver on an Ivan Herrera stolen base, which caused him some difficulty, he explained through an interpreter to reporters, including Adam Jude of the Seattle Times.

After a visit from the trainers, Castillo left the game after gritting his teeth on the mound two pitches following Herrera's steal.

Castillo's departure would significantly harm the Mariners' chances of making the playoffs, given the team is competing for both the AL West championship and a wild card. In several important offensive measures, Seattle is at or near the bottom of the league, yet the M's have prevailed thanks to their outstanding rotation.

Four of the 21 starters (Castillo, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, and Bryce Miller) who have pitched at least 161 1/3 MLB innings this season are from Seattle, demonstrating the effectiveness and durability of the rotation.

Following two trips on the injured list, Bryan Woo has been replaced in the rotation by Emerson Hancock, who has made nine starts. If Castillo needs to go on the injured list, Hancock, who is now in Triple-A, is the most likely option to rejoin the staff; but, the former top prospect hasn't shown much consistency against major league hitters.

Hancock has only had a 13.8% strikeout rate in his short MLB career, with a 4.76 ERA in 45 1/3 innings and a 4.50 ERA in 12 innings in his 2023 rookie season.
