The Miami Marlins just finished off their 2023 season with a NL Wildcard loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. With the dreary series to a close, the Marlins announced that ace Sandy Alacantara successfully underwent Tommy John surgery with no complications. He is officially out for the entirety of 2024.
Sandy Alacantara has been one of the best pitchers in the sport since his breakout 2020 season. Alacantara was coming off a CY Young season in 2022 where he pitched to a 2.28 ERA in 228.2 innings. 2023 was a bit of a different story. In 184.2 innings, Alacantara pitched to a 4.14 ERA.
Obviously Alacantara was shut down with an elbow injury and was off in 2023. There's no doubt the talent is there and he'll have all of 2024 to build up to his CY Young form. Alacantara is expected to be ready for the start of the 2025 season.
