Marlins Demote Young Starting Pitcher to Triple-A

The Miami Marlins have optioned their No. 3 prospect Max Meyer to Triple-A. This was a corresponding move for Edward Cabrera’s return to the Marlins rotation after returning from injury. Meyer has been the Marlins most consistent pitcher but they want to monitor his workload as Meyer comes back from Tommy-John surgery. Per, Christina Debi Nicola of MLB.com

Max Meyer is just 25-years-old. He made his MLB debut in 2022. Meyer pitched just a total of two games in his first season. After his two starts, unfortunately Max Meyer had to undergo Tommy-John surgery. Through the two games Meyer posted a 7.50 ERA. So there was definitely a concern that there was an injury with Max Meyer early in his MLB career.

Coming into the 2024 season, there was a lot of hope for Max Meyer. His season was off to a great start. Meyer started three games and pitched 17 innings. He posted a 2-0 record, 2.12 ERA, 14 strikeouts, and a 0.82 WHIP.

Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker spoke on the Marlins optioning starter Max Meyer today:

- He will be pitching in Triple-A; Once a week/ 3 innings kind of thing

- Would like Max to develop that 2-seamer to compliment the rest of his pitches

This move was definitely a questionable one by the Marlins. A lot more people would understand if Max Meyer was off to a bad start, but he was off to a really good start. There’s a ton of thought that Max Meyer will definitely be back up in the MLB at some point this season. Max Meyer has a lot of potential and he showed a lot of it this season.
