Miami Marlins right-handed pitcher Eury Pérez will undergo Tommy-John Surgery. Per, Jeff Passan of ESPN. Pérez is one of the best young pitchers in all of baseball, he's just 20-years-old. There's been many injuries that involves pitchers, and now you can add Eury Pérez to that list who will miss all of 2024. It's very unfortunate.
About two weeks ago, the Marlins announced that Eury Pérez has inflammation in his elbow. Pérez tried to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday, but after that he felt more soreness in his elbow. The Marlins scheduled another visit with a doctor, and it was recommended for Eury Pérez to get surgery, so now he will get the worst surgery for a pitcher.
Eury Pérez is scheduled to have the surgery on Monday. Marlins GM Peter Bendix on the injury news:
"Disappointing. We understand that this is something that happens with young pitchers. I know that Eury (Pérez) is very frustrated and is really disappointed. Although, he also understands that this is a setback in what is going to be a really long career."
Peter Bendix also noted that Eury Pérez's teammate, Sandy Alcantara will be able to help him a lot with his recovery. Sandy Alcantara is also recovering from Tommy-John Surgery, he got it last year.
This is terrible news for the Miami Marlins. They've had a really tough start to the 2024 season, and this just adds to it. Pérez made his MLB debut last season and showed a lot. In 19 starts and 91.1 IP, Eury Perez had a 5-6 record, 3.15 ERA, 108 SO, and a 1.13 WHIP. Eury Pérez is one of the 11 pitchers since 1980 to have 100+ strikeouts in a season age 20 or younger.
The Marlins haven't been able to catch any breaks this year. They're currently 0-8, and the only winless team in all of baseball. Eury Pérez brings a lot to the Marlins. Especially a young star in the clubhouse. This is going to be a long process for the Marlins and Eury Pérez.
