QUEENS, NY: According to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, Starling Marte will miss at least four weeks of baseball action and be out of commission for two weeks. MLB.com's Anthony DiComo was one of many who broke the news.
Due to a right knee bone injury, outfielder Starling Marte has been placed on the 10-day injured list, effective June 23. Ben Gamel has been chosen to fill his place on the squad. The club's 40-man roster is now currently full.
For the past three weeks or more, Marte has been experiencing knee pain. Although he has been playing through the injury and doing well overall, it looked to have become worse recently. Due to that knee, he left Saturday's game and was scheduled for an MRI on Monday.
His knee pain didn't appear to be holding him back too much, as he is now putting up a line of .278/.328/.416 for the season, which is good for a 116 wRC+. This includes a stellar June performance (.304/.360/.457 when the problem first appeared).
Marte, who struggled with the aftereffects of groin surgery last year and hit just .248/.301/.324 for a 76 wRC+, has had a fantastic comeback. For the first part of the year, he was healthy and in terrific shape, but before he can continue having a comeback season, he needs to get over this bone bruise.
The Mets lose a big piece of production considering how good Marte has been playing lately. Harrison Bader and Brandon Nimmo remain their two outfield options, but Tyrone Taylor or DJ Stewart may see an increase in playing time as a result of Marte's absence.
