BOSTON, MA: The New York Yankees and Miami Marlins have announced that Jazz Chisholm Jr. is on his way to New York in exchange for catcher Agustin Ramirez and infielders Jared Serna and Abrahan Ramirez.
When Chisholm, 26, was acquired by the Marlins from the Diamondbacks in the trade that sent right-hander Zac Gallen to Arizona, he was widely regarded as a top-100 prospect.
Since moving to the desert, Gallen has developed into one of the National League's best starts, while Chisholm's tenure in Miami has been significantly less steady.
Following a rookie season in 2021 in which he played second base and shortstop with league-average offensive production, Chisholm committed to playing second base full-time in 2022 and had a tremendous season, slashing .254/.325/.535 (136 wRC+). Unfortunately, a stress fracture in his back limited Chisholm to just 60 games that season.
Chisholm's offense hasn't improved much in 2024, .249/.323/.407 (104 wRC+) overall, but his defensive statistics have become more consistent, positioning him as a center field reserve with a +1 OAA and -4 DRS. The fact that the young player has played in 101 of Miami's 104 games this season and has even resumed playing second base in recent weeks speaks much about his durability.
Looking into his future, it is still to be determined where Chisholm will slide into the Yankees defensively. With the outfield set, this would likely mean Jazz will have some time in the infield, making Gleyber Torres, Trent Grisham, or Alex Verdugo expendable.
Chisholm is a solid fit for the Yankees as his versatile play will help the Yankees when it comes to defensive situations. With New York’s abysmal play as of late, Chisholm might be the spark the Bombers need to get back on track.
