WASHINGTON, DC: Due to a partial left plantar fascia injury, outfielder Alex Call has been placed on the 10-day injured list by the Nationals. catcher Drew Millas will be promoted from Triple-A to take Call's place on the active roster, as was first reported by The Nats Report X feed.
In the second inning of yesterday's 3-2 Nationals loss to the Braves, Call was chasing a pop-up when he went down in obvious discomfort and had to be helped off the field. Even though the injury appeared serious, Call told reporters that he has been attempting to play despite plantar fasciitis.
Earlier today, the Talk Nats stream revealed that an MRI actually showed a fascia tear rather than the early worries of a ruptured Achilles or broken foot.
Call will see a specialist to decide the best course of action for his treatment, and because the Nationals aren't in the running for the pennant, there's a possibility that Call will be sidelined for the rest of the season if his recuperation takes longer than expected.
The Nats' assessment of Call's injury as a partial tear raises questions about Call's condition, but some fascia tears can be helpful overall since a clean tear would minimize the persistent discomfort in Call's foot.
Call, who has been quietly one of baseball's hottest hitters since being promoted from Triple-A by Washington in July, is dealing with a difficult setback. After spending seven games with the Nationals earlier this season, Call is currently hitting .343/.425/.525 with three home runs in 113 plate appearances in 2024 between this hot streak and that period.
Call has been contributing to that production by making a lot of contact and walking at a rate of 10.6%, but a powerful .403 BABIP is doing most of the hard lifting.
