The 2023 MLB trade deadline has come and gone. As always, there was a lot of moves that happened on trade deadline day. Yesterday, it was over at 6pm ET. Here, there will be an offical recap of all the moves that happened yesterday in the National League.
Scott Barlow, Garrett Cooper, Rich Hill, Ji-Man Choi - Padres
The San Diego Padres made a lot of trades. In total, they acquired closer Scott Barlow, SP, Rich Hill, UTL Garrett Cooper, and 1B Ji-Man Choi. They got Scott Barlow from the Royals, Rich Hill and Ji-Man Choi they got from the Pirates, and Garrett Cooper from the Marlins. In total they gave up RHPs Henry Williams, Jesus Rios, LHP Jackson Wolf, OF Estuar Suero, 1B/OF Alfonso Rivas, and LHP Ryan Weathers. These moves do so much for the Padres, it was a great decision by the Padres front office to make these moves.
Ryan Yarbrough - Dodgers
The LA Dodgers had been seeking for pitching help this whole trade deadline. They got that by acquiring P Ryan Yarbrough. In exchange for Yarbrough the Royals received INF Devin Mann and OF Derlin Figueroa. Ryan Yarbrough is having a solid season, in 14 games, he has a 4.24 ERA, 29 SO, and a 1.20 WHIP. The Dodgers were close to trading for Eduardo Rodríguez from the Tigers, although they failed on that, and got Ryan Yarbrough.
Josh Bell - Marlins
The Marlins have been one of the surprising teams of 2023. They added to their team yesterday by trading for 1B Josh Bell from the Cleveland Guardians. For Josh Bell, the Marlins sent SS Kahlil Watson and 3B Jean Segura to the Guardians. Later, the Guardians ended up releasing 3B Jean Segura. Josh Bell is putting on a decent 2023 campaign. In 97 games, Bell is slashing .233/.318/.383, with 11 HR's, 48 RBI's, and a .701 OPS. This trade was certainly a solid find by the Miami Marlins.
Tommy Pham - Diamondbacks
The New York Mets season has been disappointing. They obviously sold many players at the trade deadline, and it continued by trading OF Tommy Pham to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Mets received INF Jeremy Rodríguez for Pham. Tommy Pham is definitely putting on a good 2023 season. In 79 games, Pham is slashing .268/.348/.472, 10 HR's, 36 RBI's, and a .820 OPS. As the Arizona Diamondbacks look to make the postseason, getting Tommy Pham was big.
Andrew Chafin - Brewers
This move comes to a surprise to some. Andrew Chafin is a reliable reliever. The Diamondbacks are looking to make the playoffs, although they traded reliever Andrew Chafin to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Diamondbacks received RHP Peter Strzelecki. Andrew Chafin has been a decent arm out of the bullpen all year. In 43 appearances, he has a 4.19 ERA, 49 SO, and a 1.43 WHIP. This is definitely a intresting move.
Michael Lorenzen - Phillies
The Phillies have been looking for SP depth. Michael Lorenzen is almost a perfect fit for the Phillies. He knows the Phillies pitching coach, Caleb Cotham. For Lorenzen, the Phillies sent 2B Hao-Yu Lee to the Tigers. Lorenzen, who was a All-Star this year, is putting on a nice 2023 season. In 18 starts, Lorenzen has a 3.58 ERA, 83 SO, and a 1.10 WHIP. This is a good pickup by the Phillies as they're looking to make another deep run in October.
Brad Hand - Braves
The Atlanta Braves didn't need much help in this years trade deadline. Although, there's never enough pitching. They showed that by trading for reliever Brad Hand. For Hand, the Braves sent minor-league RHP Alec Barger. With Brad Hand being traded to the Braves, he made a little history. He's now played for every single team in the NL East. Brad Hand is putting up average numbers, in 40 appearances, Hand has a 4.54 ERA, 41 SO, and a 1.43 WHIP. Brad Hand is nice depth in a bullpen for a team who is primed to make a deep run in October, the Atlanta Braves.
