The Baltimore Orioles have optioned INF Coby Mayo to Triple-A Norfolk. The club recalled INF Livan Soto from Triple-A. Mayo is the Orioles No. 2 ranked prospect in their loaded farm system.

There’s a lot of people who were a little shocked by this move. Mayo picked up his first hit in the MLB yesterday. It’s been a struggle for him, but reporters thought the Orioles would see if Mayo could build off of that.

This isn’t the first time this happened to an Orioles prospect. A great comparison is Jackson Holliday. He got called up and didn’t perform great, he was then sent back down to Triple-A and found himself once again. Now, Holliday is back up in the MLB and performing great. The same thing could happen with Coby Mayo.

Coby Mayo is just 22-years-old. He got his first taste at major league pitching. In 17 at-bats, Mayo slashed just .059/.200/.059 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, and a .259 OPS. Mayo didn’t get much time in the MLB, but at least he could see what it was like.

The Orioles are in a good spot. There’s always a chance Coby Mayo could be recalled at some point this season. If not, there’s always next season for Coby Mayo. He can continue to get better, Mayo has a very bright future.
