Baltimore Orioles left-handed pitcher Cole Irvin has cleared waivers and was optioned to Triple-A. About a week ago, the Orioles DFA’d Irvin. It was surprising to many people that he made it through waivers without being claimed, but he will now pitch in the Orioles minor league system.
Cole Irvin has had a lot of bad luck this season. It could just be where he was matched up against a really good team. Or, Irvin was just out-pitched.
So far this season, Cole Irvin has eaten a lot of innings for the Orioles. In a total of 21 starts, he’s pitched 94.2 innings. Irvin has a 6-5 record, 4.85 ERA, 66 SO, and a 1.40 WHIP.
In years past, Cole Irvin has pitched slightly better. For an example, in 2022, he pitched with the Oakland Athletics. Irvin was a workhorse for the A’s who needed it. He pitched in 30 games and posted a 3.98 ERA for the whole season.
It might be for the better for Cole Irvin to spend some time in the minors. It happens all the time where a player just needs to focus on getting their stuff back, especially as a pitcher.
The Orioles will obviously make the playoffs. So there’s still a chance Cole Irvin can pitch for the Orioles later this season. Especially in the postseason when a team can use any amount of arms out of the bullpen.
