MILWAUKEE, WI: The San Diego Padres have placed right hander Yu Darvish on the 15-day IL with neck tightness, per the club. The move is retroactive to April 15. The corresponding move for Darvish is recalling right handed reliever Logan Gillaspie from AAA El Paso.

The club has yet to provide any further information about Darvish’s absence, or how long the 37-year old will be sidelined.

The 12-year veteran who has spent the last four years dawning the brown and yellow of the San Diego Padres has pitched just over 23 innings this season. Along with that, Darvish has pitched to a 4.18 ERA and has compiled 22 strikeouts.

Darvish adds to the long list of pitchers who have been sidelined this season and will certainly be missed in the Padres rotation. The Padres will rely heavily on their three other starters in Dylan Cease, Michael King, and Joe Musgrove during Darvish’s absence.

Obviously Darvish’s production is going to have to be replaced by other options. The Padres system also includes the likes of Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez, Jackson Wolf, and Jay Groome.

Yu Darvish is currently in the second year of his six-year, $108 million contract. Darvish will be 41 when his deal expires. With the to be determined return for the righty, the Padres will have to find a way to replace his production in the gauntlet of the NL West.
