SAN DIEGO, CA: The San Diego Padres are finalizing a trade to acquire right-hander Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox, first to report was Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Full trade:

Padres receive:

•RHP Dylan Cease

White Sox receive:

•RHP Drew Thorpe (4th in SD system, 64th in Top 100)

•RHP Jairo Iriarte (7th in system, 109th overall)

•OF Samuel Zavala (12th in system)

•RHP Steven Wilson

Cease, 28, has two years left of team control before hitting free agency. The righty has been the ace of the White Sox pitching staff and has been with the big league club since 2019.

It was reported just two days ago that Cease’s market was quickly heating up and three clubs led the charge. Those teams being the Yankees, Padres, and Rangers. At the end, the Padres won the Dylan Cease sweepstakes.

Cease is dominate and will now serve as the ace of the staff for the Friars. In his five-year career, Cease has pitched to a 3.83 ERA, with his best season coming in 2022 when he pitched to a 2.20 ERA across 184.0 innings. His 2022 season ended with a runner-up AL Cy Young Award finalist.

Heading back to the Windy City is four young prospects, headlined by RHP Drew Thorpe. Thorpe was traded to the Padres in the deal that saw Juan Soto calling the Bronx home.

The Dylan Cease trade rumors were said to be a “steep” return for whichever club acquired his services. The four players who are heading back to Chicago have high upside. The last big piece for the White Sox left is OF Luis Robert Jr. who could possibly be dealt any day now. The full rebuild is on in Chicago.
