The Pirates will now need to stake out even more this offseason with the news of starting pitcher, Johan Oviedo, set to undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire 2024 season. Oviedo, 25, is a promising pitcher in Pittsburgh who has shown huge strides of improvement.
Making his debut in 2020 with the Cardinals, the young starter was dealt to the Pirates in 2022. Finishing with a combined 3.21 ERA, 3.23 with the Pirates, Oviedo made an instant impression on the Pittsburgh faithful. 2023 was a bit of a down year for Oviedo, finishing with a 4.31 ERA in 177.2 innings pitched.
Luckily for the starter, he will have all the time to rehab and make his return by the 2025 Opening Day. Oviedo, being so young, has plenty of time to get back to his usual self that impressed so many. For the Pirates, the rebuild is still in full swing and the news of Oviedo won't be a complete hit.
