Red Sox Add a Veteran First Baseman on a Minor League Deal

The Boston Red Sox and first baseman/designated hitter, C.J. Cron are in agreement on a minor league deal. In the deal, Cron will earn $2 million if he makes the opening day roster. In addition, Cron can unlock another $500k via incentives. According to Alex Speir of the Boston Globe.


C.J. Cron has been around the MLB for many years. He has played for multiple teams. In total, Cron has played for the Los Angeles Angels, Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, and the Colorado Rockies. Cron has been in the MLB for 10 seasons.


For the Red Sox, they will be getting a right-handed power bat. C.J. Cron has always been known for providing a decent amount of home runs a season. For his career, Cron has 187 home runs. The most Cron hit in one season is 30.


In 2023, C.J. Cron was apart of two ball clubs. The Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels. Cron performed better on the Rockies. In total, Cron appeared in 71 games last year, he slashed .248/.295/.434, with 12 HR's, 37 RBI's, and a .729 OPS.


This is a low risk, high reward type of move for the Red Sox. C.J. Cron has a lot of upside, and that could play a big factor in his 2024 season with the Red Sox. It's going to be interesting to see how C.J. Cron performs with the Red Sox.
