Heading into the 2025 season, there was a lot of controversy around the Boston Red Sox. Earlier in the off-season, the Red Sox signed all-star third baseman, Alex Bregman. They were undecided who was going to play DH, and who was going to play 3B between Alex Bregman and Rafael Devers.
There was even a point where Rafael Devers was asked about being a full-time designated hitter, his answer was simple. “No. I play 3rd base. I gave them the answer I just gave, no.”
About a week later, Rafael Devers had a different state of mind. Where he was then again asked about being the DH for the Red Sox. He answered, “I’m good to do whatever they want me to do.”
The Red Sox then decided to go with Rafael Devers as their full time DH, with Alex Bregman as the third baseman. They finally got it settled. It hasn’t quite worked out the way everyone thought it would with pairing two of the best offensive third baseman’s in all of baseball.
Neither Alex Bregman or Rafael Devers have had a good season. Although, Bregman has definitely had the better season thus far. Rafael Devers doesn’t even have a hit on the year. In 19 at-bats, Devers is slashing .000/.174/.000, 0 HR, 1 RBI, and a .174 OPS.
There is obviously a ton of time for Rafael Devers to turn it around. The Red Sox currently sit last in the AL East at 1-4. The Red Sox are definitely going to have to have their star players like Devers to play a lot better if they have plans to make it far in the 2025 season.
