Initial imaging showed Boston Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito likely has a partially torn UCL and flexor strain and could miss the 2024 season, per Jeff Passan of ESPN. Giolito, who signed a two-year deal with Boston, may need surgery to repair the right-elbow damage.
Obviously this brutal news comes at a terrible time for the Red Sox. Heading into 2024, Boston already has question marks surrounding the starting rotation. Giolito was expected to be a major part of what that pitching staff brings to the table.
As mentioned, Giolito is one of the newest additions to the Red Sox. Expectations for Giolito heading into camp, was that he can get back on track and become the pitcher he once was in Chicago.
Giolito has bounced around the league over the last year after spending his first seven seasons in Chicago (AL). Giolito was traded from the White Sox to the Angels at the 2023 trade deadline and finished his season in Cleveland.
Giolito’s 2023 finished with a 4.88 ERA across 184.1 innings pitched. That’s obviously not what Giolito can achieve. His height of his career came in 2019 where he pitched to a 3.41 ERA across 176.2 innings pitched, anchoring the White Sox staff.
Giolito is a one-time All-Star and finished 6th, 7th, and 11th in AL Cy Young Award voting. There is a possibility Giolito could find his way back to toeing the slab for Boston in 2024, however unlikely. His 2024 will likely be filled with rehabbing and gearing up for 2025.
