First baseman Joey Votto has announced his retirement after 17 seasons at the MLB level. He announced it on his instagram. Votto was playing in the Blue Jays minor league system and he decided it was finally time to hang up his cleats and retire after a legendary career.
It’s unfortunate to see such a baseball legend retire, but it was time. Joey Votto’s career was a very long one. That’s what is so great about him, he never slowed down until now because he’s retired.
Joey Votto achieved a ton of awards over the course of his career. Votto was the 2010 National League MVP, 2011 Gold Glove winner (1B), 6x All-Star, 356 HR, .409 OBP, 2,135 H, .920 OPS, and a 64.4 BWAR.
As mentioned above, Joey Votto played a total of 17 seasons at the major league level. He played every single season one with the Cincinnati Reds. It wasn’t until this past off-season that he played with a different team. It was his hometown team, the Toronto Blue Jays. Votto never reached the MLB with them, he only played in the minors.
Joey Votto has officially retired. He is 40-years-old. Maybe one day Votto will be some sort of coach on a major league team. There’s one thing that is for certain, Joey Votto will be in Cooperstown one day for the Baseball Hall of Fame.
