DENVER, CO: The Rockies announced today that they have placed left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland on the 15-day injured list (left elbow strain), retroactive to April 16, and have recalled right-handed pitcher Noah Davis from Triple-A Albuquerque, per the club.
Kyle Freeland, the ace of the Rockies, sustained an elbow injury that lands him on the 15-day IL. Freeland told Rockies reporters that he hurt his left elbow pitching in his last start in Toronto and that his injury was completely unrelated to the home plate collision in Philadelphia. Freeland expects to be out awhile, but does not believe there is UCL damage, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
With a thin bench in Monday’s game against the Phillies, the Rockies pinch-ran starting pitcher Kyle Freeland for their catcher as the go-ahead run in the ninth. Freeland got thrown out at home and injured on the play, though he returned to the dugout quickly.
Freeland was asked about the recent abundance of pitcher injuries around the game and if they have any correlation with the pitch clock..
"We're exerting our bodies that 100% at every 15 to 18 seconds. You do that and it's tough. You do that in Colorado, even tougher."
Freeland has been with the Rockies for his entire eight-year career. In those eight years, he has compiled a 4.53 ERA with his best year coming in 2018 when he pitched to a 2.85 ERA across 202.1 innings.
Freeland has pitched to a 0-3 record along with a 13.21 ERA this season. Freeland has showed decline throughout the last few seasons, but has remained a mainstay in Colorado. Although the Rockies have little to no expectations in 2024, Freeland has been a major part of their rotation.
