The Cardinals fire sale is here. Their first trade before the deadline began when they traded, recently DFA'd, reliever Génesis Cabrera to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for, recently DFA'd, catcher Sammy Hernandez.
Cabrera has spent the last four seasons with the Red Birds, compiling a 4.14 ERA in his 189.1 innings. In 2023, he's currently pitching to a 5.06 ERA in 32.0 innings. Cabrera is joining a bullpen that is already one of the best in baseball. The Blue Jays bullpen is sporting an impressive, league's fourth best, 3.62 ERA.
Cabrera's 2023 numbers have not been where he would like, however, joining this type of bullpen could only help his second half of 2023.
For the Cardinals, this begins their first of many trades coming this trade deadline. With Cabrera officially shipped off, eyes will now shift to the many other Cardinals that might be on their way out.
