The New York Yankees will travel just a borough away tomorrow for the first meeting of 2023 with the New York Mets. 2023 has not gone the way either Big Apple team has expected and tomorrow, fans of both teams will get some normality back in their lives.
The first meeting between the Yankees and the Mets took place on June 16th, 1997, at Yankee Stadium. The starting pitchers in this historic meeting were Dave Mlicki for the Mets and Andy Pettitte for the Yankees.
Fast forward 26 years later, the two teams meet for the first time this season in Queens. The Mets currently stand in 4th place of the NL East with a record of 31-35. Crosstown, the Yankees currently sit in 3rd place of the AL East with a record of 38-29.
This series will also be played without some of New York's biggest stars. Just to name a few, Aaron Judge, Pete Alonso, Nestor Cortes, and Edwin Diaz.
With both teams underperforming in 2023, it's going to be an interesting meeting for both these squads. Game one will feature Luis Severino vs Max Scherzer, while game two will have Gerrit Cole vs Justin Verlander.
