The Detroit Tigers announced multiple moves yesterday. The main one is that the club transferred infielder Javier Báez to the 60-day injured list. Manager A.J. Hinch told reporters that Báez will undergo hip surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2024 season.
Javier Báez was placed on the 10-day injured list a few days ago. The Tigers described it as lumbar spine and hip inflammation. Fast forward a few days, Báez underwent more testing and was informed he will have surgery on his hip.
The Tigers signed Javier Báez to a six-year, $140 million deal back in 2022. It hasn’t worked out for either side. Among players with at least 250 plate appearances, Brandon Drury of the Angels is the only player that has a lower wRC+ then Báez.
It’s been a rough couple of years for Javier Báez in Detroit. He’s been unlucky with his performance and injuries have hit him. In 80 games this season, Báez is slashing .184/.221/.294, with 6 HR, 37 RBI, and a .515 OPS.
It’s looking like the Tigers will miss the playoffs again. It’s been a few years since they’ve been in the playoffs. Javier Báez will now take the rest of this season and the off-season to heal up and will look to be ready for the 2025 season as he looks to bounce back.
