Top Free Agent Heads Back to Chicago on Three-Year Deal

Photo by The Los Angeles Times

CF/1B Cody Bellinger and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a three-year, $80 million contract, per Jeff Passan of ESPN. Bellinger will receive opt-outs after each of the first two years of the deal. Bellinger, 28, returns to the Cubs after a prolonged free agency.

Cody Bellinger's salary on his deal with the Chicago Cubs will pay him $30 million this season, $30 million in 2025 (if he doesn't opt out after Year 1) and $20 million in 2026 (if he doesn't opt out after Year 2).

Spring Training games started yesterday and Bellinger was just one of the many free agents without a club. A lot of reports shown that the Cubs were waiting on Bellinger's price to go down, and that's exactly what happened.

Bellinger left the Dodgers after 2022 and signed with the Cubs on a one-year deal. After slashing .307/.356/.525 with 26 home runs, he was looking for a payday.

Although he will earn $30 million a year, this contract does not meet the Scott Boras expectations. Likely why the opt outs are included. Either way, Bellinger is back in the Windy City, ready to prove himself even further.
