LOS ANGELES, CA: The Angels declared that Johnny Cueto will be assigned. Additionally, Los Angeles put reliever Carson Fulmer on the 15-day injured list (with retroactive effect to August 27) due to discomfort in his elbow.
The transfers open up slots on the roster for Caden Dana and Samuel Aldegheri, who were previously rumored to have received promotions. To free up the second 40-man spot, the Halos placed José Marte on the 60-day injured list.
Cueto was contacted by Los Angeles last week. He was given two starts, and in 11 1/3 innings, he gave up nine runs. Cueto gave up four home runs, walked three, and struck out six batters. Before the Tigers hit him for six runs on Tuesday, he had a strong start in his team debut against the Royals (three earned runs in six and a third innings).
The Angels then made the decision to give Dana and Aldegheri, two of the team's best pitching prospects, a closer look. That makes more sense than keeping looking to a 38-year-old upcoming free agent in the latter month of a disappointing season.
Although Cueto's time with the Halos wasn't particularly memorable, it was his 17th consecutive season playing in the Major League Baseball. In the coming days, Los Angeles will put Cueto on waivers. It's highly likely that he will clear and become a free agent.
