The Yankees have signed utility player José Rojas per Jon Morosi of MLB.com. The deal includes an invite to major league camp. Joel Sherman of The New York Post reports that Rojas would make $750K in the majors and $180K in the minors.
The 31-year old is returning to the United States after spending his 2023 season in the KBO. After signing with the Doosan Bears for the 2023 season, Rojas slashed .253/.345/.474, posting a 126 wRC+ and struck out just 14.7% of his 464 plate appearances. Rojas also shows a bit of pop at the plate, as he blasted 19 home runs last season.
Before his time in the KBO, Rojas was able to string together some good stats at the AAA level, but was never able to fully transition to the big leagues. Between 2021 and 2022, Rojas appeared in 83 games for the Angels, slashing .188/.245/.339.
For the Yankees, Rojas being a utility player is a good position to hold. However, with a loaded outfield led by Yankees captain Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Alex Verdugo, it’s hard to see Rojas sliding into any outfield position.
Looking into their infield, Rojas may find some time in one of those positions. Injuries also play a huge factor in whether or not Rojas will get his fair share of playing time.
