This Phillies Off-Season Addition Continues his Hot Start

It’s time to talk about Phillies starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull. This past off-season, Turnbull and the Phillies inked a deal of a 1-year, $2 million contract. There wasn’t many expectations entering the season for Spencer Turnbull, especially coming off of a rough season in 2023 with the Detroit Tigers. Spencer Turnbull wanted a fresh start, and it’s certainly working so far in Philadelphia this season.

Entering the 2024 season, Spencer Turnbull really didn’t know his place on the Phillies roster. Well, after a few weeks that was settled. Phillies pitcher Taijuan Walker landed on the injured list, which led to Turnbull being in the rotation, at least to start the season. Spencer Turnbull has ran with that opportunity and is impressing a lot of people in the Phillies organization.

It’s obviously a different sample size, but not by much. The difference between Spencer Turnbull last year and this year is very noticeable.

Spencer Turnbull’s 2023 season with the Tigers:

7 starts, 1-4 record, 31.0 IP, 7.26 ERA, 25 ER, 24 Ks, and a 1.677 WHIP.

Spencer Turnbull’s 2024 season (so far) with the Phillies:

4 starts, 2-0 record, 22.0 IP, 1.32 ERA, 3 ER, 22 Ks, and a 0.77 WHIP.

Spencer Turnbull does have a history of having really good seasons. He just has to stay healthy, and that’s exactly what he is doing early on in his Phillies career. It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how and if Spencer Turnbull can continue this amazing start.
